Rocky Horror Show - Review

rocky horror show

Wigs, stockings and heels were out in force on Monday night for the opening night of The Rocky Horror Show at the Liverpool Empire.

Walking into a theatre to watch the Rocky Horror Show is like stepping into another world – where heavy makeup is a must, tiny gold shorts on topless men are cheered and to be sitting next to a man in fishnet stockings is just the norm (ok some readers may experience this on a week-to-week basis – but for most of us it’s a tad unusual.)

This show is wild, sexy, fun and NOT one to bring your nan to see – with audience participation, men in drag and over dramatic set design this could be described as dirty pantomime.

The story revolves around Brad and Janet- a reasonably innocent newly engaged couple who run into some bad luck.

After getting a flat tyre while out driving, the pair head towards a suspicious looking castle in search of a phone. What they don’t count on is the castle, owned by sex mad transvestite Dr. Frank-N-Furter, being inhabited by Transylvanians.

Christopher Biggins

Narrator Christopher Biggins was his usual cheeky self during the show. This was his first time playing in Liverpool and I don’t think the crowd let him down with their shout backs at his commentary - and he certainly didn't dissapoint us!

Frank N Furter, played by David Bedella was, as always, the hit of the show – with one faux pa he recovered with chic charm by simply swearing at the hysterical audience. Bedella has played this role several times before on some of the world’s best stages, so it’s no surprise that he has the audience in the palm of his perfectly polished hand throughout.

If I had a word count big enough, I could go through every character in the show and compliment them individually. Everyone plays their part to perfection complimenting the carzyness that is The Rocky Horror Show.

It’s a journey of discovery, deception and debauchery – a journey that I advise everyone to take.

The Rocky Horror Show will play at the Liverpool Empire from October 4-9 2010. Tickets range from £19.50 - £34.50. To book call the box office on 0844 847 2525 or visit http://www.LiverpoolEmpire.org.uk
