Pride At the Pictures

Jan's Coming Out promo (* NEW *)

Organisers of Liverpool Pride have announced a series of LGBT films, which will form part of the festival’s extensive arts and culture programme.

Pride at the pictures is sponsored by UNISON North West and Barefoot Wines.

The films, which include two North West premiere screenings will be shown at Picturehouse@FACT over a two week period, from Tue 2 – Mon 15 August. The Liverpool Pride main event will take place at Liverpool’s Pier Head on Sat 6 August. Two of the films, The Cost of Love (Sun 7 Aug) and Break My Fall (Mon 8 Aug) will be followed by Q and A sessions, giving the audience the chance to get to know more about the film. Break My Fall is also the first fundraiser for Liverpool Pride 2012.

On Tue 2 August, FACT will screen a North West premiere of Jan's Coming Out. How does a 50 year old Baby Dyke find love? From Hebden Bridge to Province Town this is Jan Walker’s one-woman odyssey to find the perfect lesbian lifestyle after she comes out later in life. With celebrity-lesbian interviews from around the globe, this is the ultimate feel good Pride movie that will have you cheering in the aisles! Jan Walker and Carolyn Reid, the star and Director of Jan's Coming Out, will take part in a Q & A after the screening so that audience members can chat with Jan and share coming out stories and the film. This is the third anniversary of the death of Michael Causer, and there will be a chance to find out more about and donate to the Michael Causer Foundation.

On Sun 7th August, Picturehouse@FACT will show, The Cost of Love (18), a North West premiere screening, with a Q and A with director Carl Medland following the movie. Fresh from the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, this is the first of our two crunching, contemporary British dramas. Male-escort Dale’s life becomes ever more complicated with his childhood crush about to marry and a trail of sinister happenings coming ever closer. Starring Michael Joyce, better known on the London gay scene as flamboyant drag artiste Estee Applauder, and Brazilian beefcake model Israel Cassol. Part of the POUT touring programme.

Break My Fall (18) which is to be the first fundraiser event for Liverpool Pride 2012, will take place at Picturehouse@FACT on Mon 8th August at 8pm. Join Liverpool Pride for a celebratory drink in the FACT bar before settling down for the second of our POUT movies. In this tough tale, Liza, Sally, Vin and Jamie are all at a crossroads in their lives, wondering if there’s more out there than all night raves and recovery breakfasts. Liza’s 25th birthday comes as an emotional turning point, forcing them to face the future at long last. Director Kanchi Wichmann will be on hand for a Q & A after the film. (Please be aware that this film includes issues of drug and alcohol abuse as well as partnership breakup.)

On Sunday 14 August at 3pm, take the Liverpool Pride Summer of Love time machine back to late 1960’s San Francisco and wig-out with the outrageous Cockettes (15). Unforgettable drag cabaret and sexual anarchy ensue, until eventually, the group’s success overtakes them in this sparkling documentary.

Born in ’68 (18) will be screened at Picturehouse@FACT on Monday 15 August. A big, French soap opera of a movie centered on students Catherine, Yves and Hervé. The story travels from a 1960’s hippie commune with abounding free love, to the starker, harsher times of the 80’s and AIDS activism. Love and revolution will tear them apart; love and acceptance reunite them.

Tickets for all five film events are on sale via the FACT box office now.
