Man Made
Thursday 11 November
Gary Clarke, Darren Suarez and Marc Brew LEAP into Unity Theatre.
Excitement is growing in the MDI studio! Following a week of intense rehearsals, three of the finest male choreographers in British contemporary dance; Darren Suarez, Gary Clarke and Marc Brew are ready to dance up a storm at the Man Made Triple Bill, which takes place at Unity Theatre, Liverpool on Thursday November 11 as part of the Homotopia Festival and the LEAP2010 Year of Dance.
Award-winning dancer and choreographer Gary Clarke will present a sneak peak, scratch phase, of his brand new piece 9 – 5, which features four male dancers and explores the twisted underbelly of disco. Four bored housewives, stuck in a life of constant routine, feeling like living mannequins, ultimately rebel and escape into a world of sunbed cadaver and hyper-lycra clad fashionistas in a performance which promises to be utterly wagtastic.
Gary says: ”People who come and see 9 to 5 will see six men in pearls and lipstick. We see six 1950's bored housewives come face to face with todays dark and distructive disco club land in a desperate attempt to break free from their rather dull and depressing existence! “With loud music ranging from 1950's America to today’s trashy disco beats, 9 to 5 in a cavalcade of song, dance movement and mime. 9 to 5 is created on a cast of exceptional performers, some of who have worked with some of the worlds leading contemporary dance companies including Jasmin Vardimon Company, Hofesh Schecter Company, Punch Drunk Theatre and Nigel Charnock. The week’s rehearsals were intense but rather great. We got so much done in just 5 days.”
Marc Brew will present his 2008 piece Remember When, which was originally commissioned and presented by East London Dance as part of Big Dance '08. Remember When draws upon exposure, peeling away layers, using line and extension, intricate folding, placement and re-placement, opens a conversation of remembrance.
Master of Vogue; Darren Suarez will don his point shoes and perform his stunning MDI and Culture Liverpool 10 for 2010 commission B-itch Switch, which he recently performed at RUNWAY, The Justice Vogue Ball.. B-itch Switch is an exciting piece exploring of vogueography, which has its roots in the subculture of the gay scene back in the ‘70s and ‘80s.
The Man Made Triple Bill promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s Homotopia Festival. Sure to get even the coldest person hot under the collar, Man Made is one which is not to be missed.
